Lessons 1-3

After a review of basic dance elements such as stationary and locomotor movement, levels, shapes, and pathways, classes focused on spatial relationships. Students explored prepositions with the body in relationship to a rubber floor spot, to another body part, and then to a partner.

Students brainstormed a list of character relationships: parent-child, owner-pet, doctor-patient, star-fan, teacher-students, superhero-villain. Working in small groups, they choreographed two snapshots, or tableaux, to represent their characters’ relationship and a movement transition in between. Students learned to distinguish between literal (everyday) and stylized movement.

They shared and video-documented their mini-narratives and peer-assessed them using the Ladder of Feedback.

Groups revised the structure and content of their work with the support of video footage and peer feedback.
